Photographer Greg Kessler captures models backstage as they arrive at fashion shows,he has created a photo series called Model Morphosis which shows models before and after makeup. Greg Kessler captures with these shots the transformations of the model but also the transformation of the identity of the person and her look. For his series he shot backstage at shows of various fashion designers. This repeat of faces and transformations, is one of the aspects which turns the Model Morphosis series also into a very interesting and inspiring conceptual model.

A part of the series has been posted on the T Magazine blog, the style magazine of the New York Times. Instead of a side-by-side placement, there is a flash sliding bar that you move over the photo to reveal the full transformation.

Find the Model Morphosis flash slider series on the NY Times Style Magazine here .

Fashion exhibition Voici Paris: Haute Couture

Voici Paris: Haute Couture is a major exhibition which showcases the history of haute couture.

The exhibition recounts, on an inspiring way, the story of couture, beginning in the second half of the nineteenth century. This historical story is told by exclusive creations made by top designers, but also design drawings, accessories, fabric samples/swatches, embroideries, moving images and photographic material.

The Gemeentemuseum Den Haag owns one of the largest fashion collections in Europe, in which many of the well known couture houses are represented. It includes early pieces of couturiers like Worth, Poiret and Vionnet who where the forerunners of couturiers but also createurs (designers fashion) like we know them nowadays. The collection also contains famous or iconic items like for example the original pink Givenchy dress that Audrey Hepburn wore in Breakfast at Tiffany’s

Next to the historical showcase of haute couture the exhibition highlights contemporary couture. Renowned fashion houses, such as Dior, Chanel, Christian Lacroix and Jean Paul Gaultier, have loaned exclusive couture creations from their most recent collections. In a parallel to the international history of couture the exhibition features also the history of Dutch couture and shows the work of notable dutch couturiers like Frans Molenaar and Fong Leng but also work from the new generation of Dutch couturiers like Jan Taminiau.

The curator and art director of the exhibition is Maarten Spruyt, who was also responsible for previous fashion exhibitions for the Gemeentemuseum, including Fashion NL: the next generation (2006), Hague Court Fashions (2007) and The Ideal Man (2008).  This exhibition  is part of Holland Art Cities and it will run untill 6th June 2010.

The Art of Fashion: Installing Allusions

This autumn Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen will be exploring the boundaries of fashion. Today’s fashion designers are entering the area of fine art and in their turn influence the art world. The Art of Fashion reveals the sparks that fly at the interface between fashion and art. New and existing works by twenty-five international designers and artists provide a confrontational visual experience.

Fashion shows and advertising campaigns have had their day. Fashion designers present their work with installations, performances and sculptural designs. Like art, today’s fashion is collected by museums and private individuals. Conversely in recent years artists have been exploring the visual world of fashion. The fixed boundaries between fashion and art have become blurred. For the first time The Art of Fashion combines the two disciplines in a confrontational visual spectacle.

The Art of Fashion has been compiled by guest curators Jose Teunissen (lecturer at ArtEZ Arnhem) and Judith Clark (exhibition maker, London). The exhibition was made possible by the H+F Fashion on the Edge programme of author and art collector Han Nefkens, and by the Mondriaan Foundation and the Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds.
The Dutch edition of ELLE is the media partner of this exhibition. The Art of Fashion exhibition is a major part of the official programme of Holland Art Cities 2009-2010 and will run until the 10Th of January 2010.
