Warmenhoven & Venderbos: Hannelore Knuts, UltraMegaLore Fashion Icon Testimony

This post contains some snapshots which give an impression of the vernissage party and of the currently running fashion exposition, called Ultramegalore, curated by Belgian model Hannelore Knuts.

Director Kenneth Ramaekers of Het Modemuseum Hasselt (The Fashion Museum Hasselt) has asked Hannelore to assemble an exhibition that gives the visitors a glimpse into her universe that reaches further than just fashion. She turned it into a crystallisation of what motivated and inspired her during her 10 year career as a top model. Hannelore has made a compilation of her favourite designers, photographers, artists and musicians. People she has met along the way, that have inspired her or at least have left an indelible impression on her. Regardless of whether they are ‘in’ or not. She wants to share these impressions the way she collected them. A cluster of encounters, a mass of impacts. She approached her role as curator like a stylist who endlessly combines different brands, second-hand clothes and personal accessories. The exhibition is not a tribute to or a retrospective of ’the model’ Hannelore. Instead it is a confrontational look into her small world, motivated by great things, and vice versa. With her view and approach Hannelore has turned this exposition into a very inspiring fashion experience.

Diane Pernet: A shaded view on fashion film festival

A Shaded View on Fashion Film is a very interesting fashion film festival founded, curated and organised by international fashion icon and celebrated blogger Diane Pernet in cooperation with her co-producers David Herman and Antoine Asseraf. The festival was born in 2008 and back then launched at the Jeu de Paume during the last three days of the Avedon exhibition.

In this travelling festival she  combines two of her big passions: film and fashion.

Diane Pernet on the subject:
“I would love fashion films to replace fashion shows but in reality I think a major change like that will take quite some time. Certain designers create spectacular fashion shows like Galliano or McQueen, but for the most part watching male and female models walk up and down the catwalk feels a bit last century to me. I think a fashion film is a new way to express a collection. What interests me is the intersection between fashion and film. For the near future fashion film is an additional way of experiencing fashion.”

ASVOFF is a festival including a film selection & competition, documentaries, features and installations. The common thread that binds this diverse program is the use of fashion, beauty and/or style as the principal subject, theme or cinematic aesthetic. The festival is a study in the drama, power and personification that fashion evokes and commands on screen. It tries to shake up the old rules of fashion by putting the focus on the moving image, in an industry long dominated by the “still” photographic medium.

Upcoming Festival tour dates and locations:
New York March 5th 2010 as part of F Scope art fair
Moscow, April 3rd 2010 as part of Russia Fashion Week
Hyères fashion festival, April 30th to May 30th 2010 Villa Noailles, Hyères

The Art of Fashion: Installing Allusions

This autumn Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen will be exploring the boundaries of fashion. Today’s fashion designers are entering the area of fine art and in their turn influence the art world. The Art of Fashion reveals the sparks that fly at the interface between fashion and art. New and existing works by twenty-five international designers and artists provide a confrontational visual experience.

Fashion shows and advertising campaigns have had their day. Fashion designers present their work with installations, performances and sculptural designs. Like art, today’s fashion is collected by museums and private individuals. Conversely in recent years artists have been exploring the visual world of fashion. The fixed boundaries between fashion and art have become blurred. For the first time The Art of Fashion combines the two disciplines in a confrontational visual spectacle.

The Art of Fashion has been compiled by guest curators Jose Teunissen (lecturer at ArtEZ Arnhem) and Judith Clark (exhibition maker, London). The exhibition was made possible by the H+F Fashion on the Edge programme of author and art collector Han Nefkens, and by the Mondriaan Foundation and the Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds.
The Dutch edition of ELLE is the media partner of this exhibition. The Art of Fashion exhibition is a major part of the official programme of Holland Art Cities 2009-2010 and will run until the 10Th of January 2010.
