Verbeke Gallery Avantgarde Art Exhibition | Martin uit den Bogaard

The Verbeke Foundation opened recently, next to their fascinating large exhibition space at Kemzeke, also a gallery in Antwerp Belgium .
On the 12th of may 2011 a solo exhibition of avantagarde artist Martin uit den Bogaard will open at this Verbeke Gallery.
Martin uit den Bogaard is an artist who has been working for years with organic material in the shape of plants and animal tissue. He follows the decomposition process that takes place inside of glass “coffins” with photos, film and other electronic devices. One example of his astonishing work is the “Singing” series. In this series he measures the ENVI-voltage which is still in a cadaver and translates that fluctuations through a computer in picture and sound. The voice that you hear is higher or lower as the milti-voltage changes.

The above video gives a snapshot impression from the vernissage of various new exhibitions at the Verbeke Foundations of modern avantgarde art.

One of the fascinating exhibitions is Certified Copy.
In a world where numerous multinationals multiply data banks destined to the patented reproduction of genetic information, the Verbeke Foundation organised an exhibition on the notions of copying and cloning. The exhibition unites the works of over twenty international contemporary artists, like for example: L.A. Raeven, Jonas Vansteenkiste and Janieta Eyre, who are concerned in the question of the reproduction of living and lifeless materials.

From delftware from the museum of Leiden over the masterpieces of Hirst, Murakami or Cattelan, to fluorescent transgenic fishes, all presented works give us the possibility to draw a parallel between both contemporary artistic and scientific practices. The characters of the Coco Chanel logo on the exhibition poster also evoke daily counterfeited products, and the expressions of Certified Copy, Carbon Copy and Creative Commons. In fact, the exhibition adopts a critical viewpoint on the motivations for reproducing works and living organisms, and on the stipulations of this reproduction in our globalised society.

Further exhibitions which opened at the vernissage are a retrospective of the works created by Mark Verstockt, Trou de Ville and De Wolkenbreier(s).

Certified copy, Mark Verstockt and Trou de Ville will run until 10th of April 2011.
Wolkenbreier(s) will run untill the 30th of Januari 2011.

Quadriennale 2010 | Düsseldorf

Düsseldorf is an important centre for modern and contemporary art in Germany. Many new and established museums and galleries as well as exhibition events are prominent in the city on the banks of the Rhine. The world famous Kunstakademie is at the heart of the museum landscape. Many internationally acclaimed artists such as Joseph Beuys and Bernd and Hilla Becher and their students have studied and taught there. Artists such as Byars, Broodthaers and Paik were attracted to the city and have worked there.

Presence of Art “Kunstgegenwärtig – Presence of Art” – is the title of the currently running Quadriennale. The 2010 edition of this event will run untill January 2011.
Yesterday – today – tomorrow. What characterized the art that defined life in Düsseldorf in the 60s, 70s, 80s and beyond? A retrospective of the rich creation of art from these years, a time in which Düsseldorf rose to become an international centre of the art scene and had an influence on art far beyond the borders of Germany, is the starting point for further inquiry as explored in many exhibitions. What significance does this art still have today? How does the current situation of the art scene in Düsseldorf and the surrounding area present itself? And: What significance will contemporary art in Düsseldorf have in the future? Along with taking a retrospective “back to the roots” look, a critical appraisal and current self-positioning will be undertaken.

City councillor in charge of cultural affairs Hans -Georg Lohe on the thematic focus: “With a retrospective focus, the Quadriennale 2010 opens up a wide spectrum of contemporary art from the last 50 years, showing the multi-facetted interaction and the great international appeal of the Düsseldorf art scene. This is illuminated by the various exhibitions that never cease to amaze.”

Wade Guyton | conceptual monochrome paintings

Currently the museum Ludwig in Cologne, Germany is showing an interesting exhibition from work of American artist Wade Guyton. The monochrome planes, stripes and bars, which Guyton has recently begun using very often, are computer-generated. The colour black and the letter X have become signature motifs in his work. These newer paintings by Wade herald the modernist motif par excellence: the monochrome. The classical monochromes by Alexander Rodchenko or Robert Ryman had already served to reduce painting to its essence: color, canvas, and frame. It can be assumed that Guyton’s monochrome bars, even when they appear in larger complexes, have a similar objective to that of Rodchenko and Ryman, namely self-reflective painting. However where other artists have used brushes, light, sounds or even metaphors to paint, Wade started (ab) using an inkjet printer. As medium he started out with paper but moved to canvas. He prints the elementary geometric forms he uses over and over again by feeding the canvas into the printer again and again. This sometimes causes the print head to lose grip. These errors in the printing process produce elisions and streaks.

Guyton follows a strict plan; it is for instance important that the dimensions of each canvas be adapted to the technical details and the space in question. And although the width of all the artist’s works produced on the printer is the same, the length is oriented to the architecture of the exhibition room.

The exhibition in the museum Ludwig is curated by Dr. Julia Friedrich and will run until 22-08-2010

Hannelore Knuts, UltraMegaLore Fashion Icon Testimony

This post contains some snapshots which give an impression of the vernissage party and of the currently running fashion exposition, called Ultramegalore, curated by Belgian model Hannelore Knuts.

Director Kenneth Ramaekers of Het Modemuseum Hasselt (The Fashion Museum Hasselt) has asked Hannelore to assemble an exhibition that gives the visitors a glimpse into her universe that reaches further than just fashion. She turned it into a crystallisation of what motivated and inspired her during her 10 year career as a top model. Hannelore has made a compilation of her favourite designers, photographers, artists and musicians. People she has met along the way, that have inspired her or at least have left an indelible impression on her. Regardless of whether they are ‘in’ or not. She wants to share these impressions the way she collected them. A cluster of encounters, a mass of impacts.She approached her role as curator like a stylist who endlessly combines different brands, second-hand clothes and personal accessories. The exhibition is not a tribute to or a retrospective of ’the model’ Hannelore. Instead it is a confrontational look into her small world, motivated by great things, and vice versa. With her view and approach Hannelore has turned this exposition into a very inspiring fashion experience.
