In his fascinating series of work, New York artist, Michael Mapes created human specimen boxes by dissecting, rearranging and reconstructing representations of a selected specimen. De-constructed photos are combined with fragments with a more “personal Dna” such as hair, tears, calendar dates and geographical references and form as final result a stunning series of scientific sculptural collages.

Marina Abramovic | The Abramovic Method

The PAC in Milan is the venue chosen by Marina Abramovic to host her latest conceptual performance piece, entitled The Abramovic Method. It is a fascinating work of avantgarde art.

The Abramovic Method continues Abramovic’s three major performances from the last decade: The House With the Ocean View (2002), Seven Easy Pieces (2005) and The Artist is Present (2010). The key element is always the constant relationship with the public, which becomes part of the artwork. The performance piece at the PAC further blurs the line between audience, artist and participant. The works, which combine furniture with embedded minerals, allow the public to interact with them though standing, sitting or lying down on the sculptures. The audience becomes the performer by observing eachother with for example telescopes or by standing, sitting or lying down in absolute silence with the help of headphones.
By doing this they expand their senses and learn to listen and to observe. The Abramovic Method aims to transform the artist, the performers and the public.

Marina Abramovic about the work:
“In my experience, as developed in a career of over 40 years, I have arrived at the conclusion that the public plays a very important and indeed crucial role in performance,” she explains. “The performance has no meaning without the public because, as Duchamp said, it is the public that completes the work of art. In the case of performance, I would say that public and performer are not only complementary but almost inseparable.”

The performance at the PAC (Padiglione d’Arte Contemporanea) in Milan will run until June 10, 2012.

Absalon | Exhibition at Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen

An interesting retrospective exhibition which shows works by the French-Israeli artist Absalon (1964 – 1993) is running at Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Rotterdam. This exhibition transferred from the KW Institute for Contemporary Art in Berlin.

The works on display are a fascinating statement around key concepts like: re-defining spaces, systematic and successive cataloguing, human activities, the primitive shapes and the human body.

A fragment from the press release:

As in the KW in Berlin, the exhibition will display Absalon’s enigmatic works – living cells painted neutral white and made entirely of wood. These so called ‘Cellules’ are, as it were, living pods for just one person, in which everything can be found for day-to-day, ritual activities down to the smallest detail, including window slits to keep unwanted guests at a distance. Absalon created these units for six World cities: Tokyo, New York, Tel Aviv, Paris, Zurich and Frankfurt. The form of Absalon’s Cellules is reminiscent of the modernist architectural styles of Le Corbusier, Bauhaus, De Stijl and the Russian constructivism. They are, however, stripped of their Utopian ideals. The living cells are based on the dimensions of Absalon’s own body and are, as it were, air-raid shelters for just a single person. The spaces suggest a need for protection and shielding from the chaotic daily life. Absalon described his Cellules as “a bastion of resistance against a society that prevents me from becoming what I must become.”

The exhibition will run until 13 May 2012.
